Unfortunately,
people
who have been attacked or feel insecure are
always prone to kneejerk reaction. However, since the invasion of Iraq
the Bush
administration has escalated the cycle of violence and injustice in
such a way as to
make the world less secure. It will now be more
difficult for the West to influence or have peaceful relations with the
majority world. Most Americans I have met have been kind and
courteous, but many don't want to think or to know what the world is
really like because the reality is too frightening. In some
cases, their religion seems as blinkered as bin Laden's. Democracy
needs informed citizens. There are certain evil people and
organisations who have do their best to keep ordinary people
misimformed and predjudiced. Foremost amongst these is Rupert
Murdoch (below)
whose News Corp (Fox in the US) operates around the world.
His
ownership of the SUN in the
UK has been a disgrace, as he has done his best to debase the culture
and
language of Shakespeare. This born-again Christian peddles soft porn,
untruths, fear and hatred of
foreigners. On the other hand, if it suits his business, his
relationship with the Chinese has shown that he is quite
prepared to prostitute his media to those he considers to be more
powerful
than he is.
The only good thing about Bush's victory is that now the
chickens come
home to roost, there is no-one else to blame. He will have
to sort out his own mess! Iraq is descending into worse chaos
because of lack of planning and military hamfistedness. The
budget deficit will cause huge economic problems, and the worsening
weather in
tropical USA might finally convince the some of the sceptics of global
warming. To paraphrase the old Chinese Curse - we are living in
interesting times!

I feel rather sorry for poor old Helmie, probably the most
civilised
politician of the Right in Europe in recent times. Under him, the
CDU opposed Nationalism, and supported social services.
Here
is another joke about him. When he was in power, people often
poked
fun at him for his alleged "simplicity" and parochialism. Trying
to counter this, he told a radio interviewer: "Meine Frau und ich
haben angefangen Esperanto zu lernen, un wir waren so begeistert,
daß
wir entscheiden haben da auf Urlaub zu gehen." (Translated as "My
wife and I started to learn Esperanto, and we enjoyed it so much that
we
decided to go there on holiday!")
